Using the camera as a research tool - allowing observations and stories of the people to unfold in a visually provoking narrative

Defining the Individual

I set out with my camera to understand what the role of the individual means to people, how it differs from person to person, and what people think their own roles are. Through conversations with several different individuals in the context of their lives, relationships, and responsibilities, I was able to create a narrative around how people define the role of the individual, which as it turns out isn't always about individuality. Often, it's bigger than just oneself.

Research Questions

What is the role of the individual as it relates to:

Society

Groups

Relationships

The Individual

Key Takeaways

After talking to these different individuals, I formed these observations about the role of the individual in respect to four different areas:

Society: For better or for worse, individuals shape the society they live in through interactions with their environment and other people.

Groups: A successful group dynamic depends on the individuals that it's comprised of. If someone doesn't honor their responsibilities, the group could fall apart.

Relationships: Two halves of a whole - relationships work when the individuals respect and support each other where it's needed.

The Individual: Our roles change depending on where we are in life. From being a parent, friend, child, employee, student, etc. we all have roles to play.
